Getting Started
What tools do I need to install Cyclowax?
The Cyclowax Clean Chain starter kit contains the Cyclowax pre-waxed chain and all the necessary tools to prepare your bike and start with waxing. During the installation, the only items you need that are not in the kit are: a chain whip, an Allen key and a chain cutter. If needed, you can buy a chain whip and chain cutter at the check out.
Do I need to install a new cassette and pulley wheels?
Not necessarily. The Cyclowax Clean Chain Starter kit contains a Bike preparation kit to degrease your cassette, chainrings, derailleur and pulley wheels. If it is anyway time for a new cassette and pulley wheels, you can install new ones so you only need to degrease your derailleur and front chain ring.
Maintenance
The Starter Kit
I am using liquid wax today, is it the same?
No, it's not the same. Liquid waxes stay sticky and attract dirt, so you end up cleaning your drivetrain more often. Plus, they don't last as long, usually just around 100km or 60miles. But with Cyclowax, every time you re-apply it, it's like giving your chain a deep clean. And unlike liquid wax, it stays clean and goes the distance, holding up for up to 500km/310miles.
Why do I need to buy a Starter kit?
The Cyclowax Starter Kit has everything you need to kickstart your chain waxing journey for a hassle-free, clean riding experience. Just buying the items separately won't cut it. Start by ensuring your drivetrain is squeaky clean with the Bike Preparation Kit. Next up, install the Cyclowax pre-waxed chain, completely grease-free, for those initial clean rides. Re-wax every 300/500km or 190/310miles to ensure optimal performance and a long-lasting drivetrain.
Is Cyclowax for all weather conditions?
Yes. Cyclowax wax does not attract dirt and is excellently water-repellent, but in wet conditions more frequent waxing will be necessary to prevent rust.
Can I use Cyclowax on my Gravel and Mountain bike?
For sure. Cyclowax can be used on several different types of bikes especially Road, Gravel, Mountain and TT bikes. The advantages of a clean chain when riding in dirty conditions are just greater.
Can I use Cyclowax on my Indoor Bike Trainer?
Yes, you will have to prepare your indoor bike trainer in the same way you prepared your outdoor bike. Side note, a freshly waxed chain will shed some wax flakes at the start. This is unavoidable, but it beats oil stains on your floor anytime and is easily removed with a vacuum cleaner. You can reduce the effect by using your chain outdoors first and loosen the chain thoroughly before installing.
Can I touch my chain with my bare hands?
Absolutely! Because your chain and drivetrain don't attract dirt, you can now touch your chain with bare hands. No more chainring tattoos, and say goodbye to dirty hands. Your bike mechanic will thank you too.
Why does your wax only last 300-500km or 190/310miles?
Distinguishing between optimal performance and what's achievable in the best conditions is crucial. While nearly every hot wax available can endure up to 800km/500 miles on well-maintained roads in favorable weather, this doesn't hold true for mountain biking. The reality is quite different. We strongly recommend reapplying the wax after 300km/190 miles because over time, the wax layer thins out, leading to increased chain wear. By waxing every 300km/190 miles, you maximize the lifespan of your chain and drivetrain.
By specifying the 300-500km or 190/310 miles range, we align with the real world experiences of most riders across various surfaces.
Waxing
How do I know when I need to wax?
The Clean Chain Starter Kit gives you access to our Cyclowax app.
By connecting it to Strava, you'll know when to re-wax your chain. This timely maintenance always ensures the best performance and saves your gear. Better for your wallet and the planet.
Why do I need to replace my Wax Tablet after 12 uses?
Each use of the hot wax ensures optimal cleaning and lubrication. However, after twelve applications, the wax starts to become saturated, needing replacement for continued optimal performance. The app conveniently provides real-time tracking, enabling you to gauge the remaining number of waxes and maintain peak efficiency.
Can I use my same heater for multiple chains and bikes?
You can use your Cyclowax waxing tools for all bikes. And you can also keep track of the waxing of your multiple bikes with the Cyclowax app.
If you use Cyclowax on several bikes, make sure that you use a specific Cyclowax chain for each bike. The subtle difference between drivetrains can affect the wear of your chain and drivetrain.
How do I remove the wax from the heater?
Can I use my Wax Tablet also for my other bikes?
You can use your wax and your Cyclowax waxing tools for all bikes. With the Cyclowax app you can also track your waxing of your multiple bikes. Just make sure you use a chain only on one bike. Switching the same chain between bikes is not a good idea. The subtle difference between drivetrains influences the wear and tear drastically. So if you want to use Cyclowax on multiple bikes, use an extra Cyclowax chain per bike. Remove all grease by preparing the drivetrain of your other bike(s) in the same way you prepared your first bike.
What is the wax made of?
We use high grade wax and friction lowering additives. The exact ingredients are a secret. No solvents or harmful chemicals added. Free of forever chemicals and PFAS.
Pre-waxed chains
Can I use my own chain?
Yes, you can use your own chain, but it’s not advised.
To make sure you get the best performance and a clean drivetrain, you need to clean the chain in a multiple step process with various chemicals. We do that for you and dispose of any chemicals in the correct way. The 10/11/12-speed Cyclowax chain includes a tool-free quick link which allows you to open your clean chain with your bare hands. To make re-waxing even easier.
Is the Cyclowax chain a high performing chain?
Absolutely. The 10 and 11 speed chains are based on the Connex sX chains which are known as one of the highest quality chains. The stainless steel inner link and the innovative high-grade nickel coating make this chain extremely resistant to corrosion. On top of that it contains a high-performance plate geometry that ensures smooth shifting.
Can I use my Cyclowax chain on other bikes?
Switching the same chain between bikes is not a good idea. The subtle difference between drivetrains influences the wear and tear drastically. So if you want to use Cyclowax on multiple bikes, use an extra Cyclowax chain per bike. Remove all grease by preparing the drivetrain of your other bike(s) in the same way you prepared your first bike. You can use your Cyclowax waxing tools for all bikes. And you can also track your waxing of your multiple bikes with the Cyclowax app.
Do I need to clean my chain after my ride?
No, that is the beauty of Cyclowax! No degreasers or special cleaning products needed. In case your chain and bike are dry, and you have not passed the 500km or 310miles mark, you can just store your bike, and you're a ready for the next one. In case you want to wash your bike, you take your chain off, and you only need water, a bit of soap and a sponge to entirely wash your bike! After wet rides it is recommended to re-wax your chain to drain out any water, deep clean your chain and foresee a fresh wax layer.
How often can I use the quick link?
Cyclowax/Connex tool-free quick links last the lifetime of the chains. The quick link is compatible with all Cyclowax chains, but also all Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM Eagle (Not T-Type) chains.
SRAM FlatTop users are currently out of luck.
If you're using a standard quick link, it's officially stated to use it only 1 times. But from ours and others testing you can use it up to 5 times.
Please always install a new standard quick link before any bunch racing.

Track
Hot Wax can be used on the Track and has been used to set World Records.
For the Track, however, it's important to prepare the chain in the best possible way. We follow these steps:
1. Completely degrease the chain in a multistep process.
2. Run in the chain dry to remove any imperfections.
3. Wax the chain
4. Wipe off any excess wax on the outside of the chain.
5. Break in the chain for at least 1 hour at 250w.
This all to ensure that no wax will be falling off on the track and the chain is in perfect shape.
MTB Beach
MTB Beach racing is one of the worst enemy for any component, including the chain.
Based on extensive testing, a waxed chain will last up to 150km or 95 miles on the beach with sand, water and salt. Still providing low friction where oil will turn into a grinding paste.
Cyclo-cross
The lifespan of a wax treatment for Cyclo-cross will greatly depend on the circumstances.
The early season dry and dusty races are perfect for a hot waxed chain and your chain will last up to 300km or 190miles.
For sandy courses like Zolder and Zonhoven the waxed chain will last up to 150km or 95miles. Depending on how wet the course is.
For muddy races, a waxed chain will only last up to the end of the race for optimal performance. Especially if you use multiple bikes during the race.
Ultracycling/Bike-packing
Depending on your riding style, a waxed chain will last up to 800km or 500miles.
For ultracycling or bike-packing you need to re-wax the chain once you start hearing the chain become louder. This will depend on the surface and weather conditions.
If you're riding in 1 go, it's advised to use oil to top-off the chain, since liquid wax only performs well once it's dried. After your trip, you need to completely degrease the chain to remove any oil contamination.
If you're taking rest periods or sleep overnight, you can apply a liquid wax. Most liquid waxed require a drying period of 6-8 hours.
